About

The Havre de Grace Youth Sailing Program offers sailing instruction that includes introductory and competitive dinghy sailing, along with instruction in maritime safety. Participants take part in environmental history and awareness activities and on- and off-water special events. All participants must pass a basic swim test with a life jacket given by a Red Cross certified water safety instructor.

• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Mid-June through mid-August

Since its pilot program in 2016, the Havre de Grace Youth Sailing Program has offered sailing instruction for students between 7 and 17 years of age. The program’s mission is to offer instruction in maritime safety, age-appropriate introductory through competitive dinghy sailing, and environmental history and awareness, and to provide access to on-the-water personal development and confidence and character building opportunities for youth ages 7–18 in greater Harford County on the Upper Chesapeake Bay. The program is managed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors.

US Sailing certified instructors lead the program, and student-to-instructor ratios never exceed 10-to-1. The program is described as safety oriented sailing instruction for area youth, and instructors are US Sailing certified. Havre de Grace Youth Sailing Program Inc. is a community-oriented nonprofit.

The program also offers on- and off-water special events to encourage interest, develop community engagement, and support educational advancement, and these events are available to the entire community with active outreach. Parent and student comments describe hands-on sailing experiences, independence on the water, teamwork, and learning skills such as responsibility, following directions, listening, and interacting with peers. Testimonials also note that campers sail on their own, practice teamwork to avoid capsizing, learn how to right a boat after capsizing, and make connections with counselors and fellow sailors.
